Welcome to York Region Senior Tamils' Centre

The York Region Senior Tamilsí Centre was inaugurated in November 2007 with just 25 members. The Centre has since surpassed the 200 mark, by the year end, 2013.

Our aims and objectives are:

i)        To encourage seniors to contribute their skills, experience and wisdom, in support of social well-being in the Tamil Community in particular and others in general in the York Region.

ii)       To promote the ongoing involvement of seniors with other similar organizations and to adapt to the Canadian way of life.

iii)      To assess the common social and health problems of the seniors and explore ways of meeting these needs by raising awareness about the abuse and neglect of older adults.

iv)      To encourage the engagement of youth with senior activities and to promote arts and culture.

v)       To promote a Seniors for Seniors Project that would reduce loneliness, social and spiritual isolation thereby assisting seniors living alone, in their own homes and in elder care centres;  and, to provide information on seniors programs and services of The Governments of Ontario and Canada.

Current programs include services geared towards active senior participation and their well being.

They are,

Computer Literacy, Yoga, Scientific Cutting, Healthy cooking, Costume Jewellery Making,  Photography and Newsletter Publishing.

Classes are conducted every Sunday, at The Rouge Woods Community Centre, 110 Shirley Drive, Richmond Hill, ON. YRSTC has rented additional recreation facilities at the Centre from November 2013, in view of the increased interest and active participation of our members in all the above programs.

In addition, tours of historical interest, picnics, cultural and religious activities are also arranged for the benefit of all our members who actively participate and volunteer in these programs.

Our long term goal is to establish a cultural centre of our own, where our seniors could meet regularly, exchange ideas and participate in recreational activities.  Now we meet monthly at the Rough Woods Community Centre at 110, Shirley Drive in Richmond Hill.

We hope every member of the centre will give their corporation to achieve these objectives. The website gives an overview of our organization and the various activities that we are engaged in, that support the principles of respect and dignity of all our seniors.
